“Bayanihan” Makes “Pamaskong Handog” Medical Mission A Success

Last December 2, patients from Las Piñas City who went to the “Pamaskong Handog” Health and Wellness Medical Mission received free consultation, medication, and even referrals to health facilities that could extend further assistance.

Aside from a number of medical benefits offered to the community, the event showcased how volunteerism encapsulated in the “Bayanihan” spirit can bring positive impact for those involved in such endeavors.

National Volunteerism Month

With the Christmas season, the country celebrates National Volunteerism Month this month with the theme “Igniting Volunteer-Led Innovation for Future Growth and Social Transformation”. Focal agency Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency shares that this recognizes the important contributions of volunteerism in nation-building.

It adds that the Filipino brand of volunteerism “Bayanihan” has evolved to engage all sectors – government, non-government organizations, academic institutions and corporate groups to participate in volunteer service for development.

Medical Mission Accomplished

Advocacy platform CSR INSIGHTS is humbled to have contributed to this vision of community building by co-organizing the “Pamaskong Handog” Health and Wellness Medical Mission. Its Advisor Engr. Ophelia M. So, who is also Founder and Retired President of AlphaStar Educational Centre, Inc., made sure strategic opportunities were set for various stakeholders to be able to volunteer their time, effort and resources.

One of the first organizations to pledge its financial support is a group of Filipinos based in Singapore called FLAGS or Filipino Ladies Group – Singapore, led by its current President Vilma Santillan through Treasurer Violeta Liew. They regularly assist projects that promote Filipinos’ wellbeing, and culture among others.

Medication sponsors were GX International, Inc. and Otsuka Philippines Pharmaceutical Inc. The latter also provided additional beverages and medical assessments through their Medical Representative Lloyd Anthony Purificacion, and Clinicians Shirly Hernandez and Rose Abides.

Golden Ager Physical Therapy & Nursing Services with owner Physical Therapist Christopher Serrano, PTRP guided patients with pain and mobility concerns, and brought for everyone Taho snacks.

Maria Regina Villagracia, owner of Kix’s Catering Food Services, sent breakfast meals for patients,  and volunteer healthcare practitioners: brothers Aynrand and Angelo Tirazona, who came from as far as the Municipality of Capul in Northern Samar, and Arlene Dias.

The team of volunteers also included Stephanie M. So, Mylene Arevalo, and teachers from Alphastar Montessori School led by Principal Shirly Pelito, who were managing logistics, and assisting in taking patients’ vital signs and other records.

Doctors in the medical mission were Dr. Jacklyn M. So-Cabahug, Head of Internal Medicine at Pope John Paul II Hospital and Medical Center, and Dr. Elaine Marie Reyes-Madamba, Fellow, Philippine Pediatric Society.

Spreading Good News

Media partners of “Pamaskong Handog” Health and Wellness Medical Mission were The New Channel led by President and Chief Executive Producer Apple Esplana-Manansala who gave additional bags as giveaways; and DNX News led by its Executive Editor and Chief Executive Officer Julius Mariveles;

Moreover, those who helped in spreading news about the said medical activity were DZRJ 810 AM Radyo Bandido TV through its public service program S.O.S. Serbisyo, Ora Mismo, Sigurado with veteran broadcast journalist Johnny Gomez; Modern Journal Trends, and WhenInManila .com led Managing Editor Nicole Villaluz Chacon-Millan with Editorial Assistant Kayla Ramos.

A Civic Leader

With decades of work of improving the welfare of the community, many consider Engr. Ophelia M. So an education and health champion.

“We hold medical missions because it’s our way of helping those who need medical attention and our way of thanking God for the graces given to us,” said the respected civic leader, and host of Lifelong Learning program on CSR INSIGHTS.

Good Matters

Established in 2021 by seasoned public relations and corporate social responsibility practitioner Deivid Rioferio, CSR INSIGHTS aims to inspire others to do good through its three pillars of good works: Public Relations, Program Development and Philanthropy.

“Working with the community is one of the best ways to improve our wellbeing. We consider it a blessing to be trusted by our partners in sustaining these initiatives,” said Rioferio, who is also Public Relations Manager of World Vision, the largest non-profit organization in the Philippines.

Digital News Exchange in 2022 recognized the said online platform as a #ForceForGood through its public engagement arm, The Citizens Xchange.

In pursuit of its mission, it has supported the promotion of projects, among others, by academe: Lyceum University of the Philippines and Adamson University communication and business classes, and NGO: LINKS Building Bridges for Children, Silid Aralan, Inc., and Japanese non-profit Dear Me by coxco.
