Empowering Women, Empowering the Nation: Celebrating Women’s Month in the Philippines

This March, as the world commemorates International Women’s Month, the Philippines shines bright in its tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Filipina.

On March 3, 2025, the Independence Flagpole at Rizal Park, Luneta, became the focal point for a momentous celebration—the Women’s Month Flag Ceremony. This event, a joint initiative of the Salute To A Clean Flag Movement, the National Parks Development Committee, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, was co-presented by the Philippine Women’s Economic Network (PhilWEN) and The New Channel (TNC) highlighting Global Women Who RULE (GWWR), both champions of women’s empowerment and leadership.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Gail Macapagal, Jan Arceo, Carmie de Leon, Elize Estrada, Kimberly Lim, Emmy Lou Delfin, Czelene Pabico, Jennelyn Alegarbez, Apple Esplana- Manansala, Shirley Anne Fernando, and Col. Francel Margareth Padilla

In celebration of the achievements of Filipino women, the event honored the legacy of Margarita Forés, a culinary icon who left an indelible mark on the Philippine dining scene. Gaita Forés, who passed away on February 11, 2025, at the age of 65, was a celebrated chef and restaurateur known for her pioneering work in introducing authentic Italian cuisine to the Philippines through her renowned restaurant chain, Cibo, and other establishments like Grace Park and Lusso.

In 2016, she was named Asia’s Best Female Chef, a testament to her dedication and passion for culinary excellence. Forés was also recognized with the Order of the Star of Italy in 2018, further solidifying her international reputation. Her legacy extends beyond her culinary achievements; she was a two-time cancer survivor and an advocate for sustainable agriculture

The year 2025 marks significant milestones in the pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Philippines. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA), and the 45th year of the Philippines’ signing of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

These milestones reaffirm the country’s long-standing commitment to advancing women’s rights and promoting inclusive development. The Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (PPGD), which concludes this year, has been instrumental in guiding gender equality efforts over the past three decades.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has been at the forefront of empowering women, particularly those from vulnerable and disadvantaged sectors. Through various programs and services, the DSWD equips women with skills and knowledge to aid them in decision-making and helps them become entrepreneurs and community leaders.

The New Channel (TNC) has been actively involved in promoting women’s empowerment through its flagship project, Global Women Who RULE (GWWR). This initiative is dedicated to celebrating and empowering Filipino women who are making a difference in their communities. GWWR provides a platform for influential women to share their stories, experiences, and advocacies, inspiring others to take action and make a positive impact.

In 2025, GWWR continues to evolve, focusing on four pillars of growth: Education, Training & Personal Development; Health & Mental Wellness; Advocacy & Sustainability Projects; and Business & Wealth Management. This year, nominations are open for empowered Filipino women who are big on community building, prioritize family, and have an exciting personality that can be used to promote social good.

Across the country, various regions and institutions celebrated Women’s Month with their own unique events. In Northern Mindanao, agencies launched Women’s Month celebrations emphasizing inclusivity and the role of women in nation-building. MSU-IIT constituents welcomed the month with a flag-raising ceremony, wearing ASEAN-inspired outfits with a purple motif to show their commitment to amplifying women’s rights.

The Women’s Month Flag Ceremony concluded with a resounding call to action. It urged everyone to join in the movement towards a more inclusive and equitable society, where women have equal opportunities and are free from discrimination. The event served as a reminder that the journey towards gender equality is ongoing and requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders.

As the Philippines celebrates this milestone, it reaffirms its commitment to the principles of gender equality and women’s empowerment, aligning with international efforts to create a world where every woman can thrive. The Women’s Month Flag Ceremony was a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of the Filipina spirit, inspiring a brighter future for generations to come.
