Digital Innovation for Women Advancement (DIWA) Asia-Pacific Policy Leaders 2024 Summit (Day 2)

Manila, Philippines – The second day of the Digital Innovation for Women Advancement (DIWA) Asia-Pacific Policy Leaders Workshop at De La Salle University in Manila on 24 September 2024 continued to explore ways women could be empowered in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry.

Organized by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TELWG), Digital Economy Steering Group (DESG), Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE) and Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI), the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts from APEC economies.

The day began with a sharing session on Best Practices for Female Inclusion in ICT. Panelists including, Assistant Secretary Maria Teresa Camba, Department of Information and Communications Technology- Philippines, and Raisa Isaac Orbon of Packetworx, discussed strategies for promoting gender equality, attracting and retaining female talent, and driving positive social change within the ICT sector.

The second sharing session focused on Creating Powerful Branding and Marketing Campaigns for Women in ICT moderated by Daniel Robbins, Advisory Board Member of Global AI Council. Panelists Cara Wilson from the FTW Foundation, and Joie Cruz, CEO of Limitless Lab, discussed how to effectively put strategies into practice to advance gender equality and provide more opportunities for women in ICT, emphasizing the importance of storytelling, leveraging digital channels, and measuring campaign effectiveness to drive positive change.

The third and final sharing session explored Advocacy for Women in ICT and Crafting the Message and Medium through ICT channels. Panelists Maya Tamayo from Angat Bayi, Gichelle Cruz of USAID, Glycirynne Dianne Apolonio from Converge, and Dr. Lizan Perante-Calina of the Philippines Futures Thinking Society, along with DIWA fellows from APEC Communities, shared their advocacy experiences, demonstrating how strong networks and targeted messaging can create meaningful impacts. President of The New Channel, Apple Manansala, moderated the session, emphasizing the importance of crafting messages that not only inspire but also lead to actionable change.

The two-day Women Empowerment Summit concluded with a Call to Action led by Undersecretary Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, Project Overseer and Undersecretary for ICT Industry Development, DICT- Philippines. As the workshop wrapped up, participants reaffirmed their commitment to advancing gender equality in ICT, ensuring that the APEC region leads by example in fostering an inclusive digital future. DICT and DIWA promised more similar activities to happen in the coming months, so stay tuned for those announcements.
