Quezon City, Philippines – The 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS) 2024, a five-day event held at the Novotel Manila Araneta City, concluded with a grand Closing Ceremony and Celebratory Cocktails Night on 25 October 2024, bringing together a diverse lineup of speakers and performers, including renowned artists, industry experts, and government officials.
The event, organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) through the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR) in partnership with the Office of the Honorable Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, was hosted by sports producer, storyteller, and event host Yani Mayo, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss the latest trends and challenges in copyright law and technology, and to reflect on the insightful discussions and presentations that took place throughout the 5-day summit.
The closing ceremony kicked off with welcome remarks from Atty. Rowel S. Barba, Director General of the IPOPHL, followed by a series of special messages from esteemed figures in the industry including, Marla de Castro-Rausch, Founder and CEO of Animation Vertigo, a motion-capture animation company and President of the Creative Content Creators Association of the Philippines, Inc. (SIKAP); Ramon Orlina, Renowned Contemporary Glass Sculptor, Gawad CCP Para sa Sining Awardee, and 2024 Gawad Yamang Isip Awardee; Alice Reyes, Founder of Ballet Philippines, National Artist for Dance, and 2022 Gawad Yamang Isip Awardee; and Gary Valenciano, multi-awarded OPM singer-songwriter, musician, actor, and 2024 Gawad Yamang Isip Awardee; as well as from Atty. Emerson G. Cuyo, Director IV of the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights-IPOPHL; and a closing remark from the Deputy Director General of IPOPHL, Atty. Ann Claire C. Cabochan.
Media and entertainment industry leaders including Apple Esplana-Manansala, President of The New Channel and Master Franchisee of Karaoke World Championships (KWC) Philippines, and Direk Gladys Basinillo of PraXis, were also in attendance. Their presence underscored the summit’s significance to various creative sectors, including media and music, as well as their continued commitment to elevate Filipino talent and intellectual property protection, aligning with IPOPHL’s vision for a globally competitive IP ecosystem.
Furthermore, the Celebratory Cocktails Nights featured a celebratory night of live music and performances by Ronnie Liang, Performance Dance Art by the Artist Welfare Project, Inc. (AWPI), Tanya Markova, and our very own Karaoke World Championships Philippines 2024 Grand Winner, Jan Francis Alinsonorin, providing attendees with a joyful conclusion to a productive and enlightening summit week. This allowed guests to network and exchange ideas in a more relaxed setting, wrapping up a week filled with insightful discussions in the field of copyright.
The 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit marks a significant step forward in addressing the evolving copyright issues, providing a valuable platform for discussion on copyright policies and practices that can better serve both creators and consumers in an increasingly digital world, ultimately contributing to the advancement of intellectual property protection in the Philippines.
